Abstract : In an MHD generator of small size it is desirable to have the electrodes in contact with the hot gas in the free stream. This can be most surely accomplished for a Hall generator by employing wire electrodes which extend entirely across the interior of the channel. The wire electrodes lie in one or more planes perpendicular to the magnetic field, each wire being perpendicular to the direction of the gas flow. The electrical performance of a Hall generator with this geometry is calculated and found to depend on the Hall parameter, and on the height to width ratio of the channel cross section. There are indications that the performance of these electrodes is nearly equivalent to the performance of wire electrodes which penetrate the wall boundary layer but do not extend entirely across the channel.
