Abstract : The necessity is considered of determining the effective lengths of reference signal paths in a system which measures the travel time of an electromagnetic wave. The results of the investigation described herein are directly applicable to the DME-Doppler system being developed at White Sands Missile Range. Methods for computing changes in the average index of refraction over the reference signal paths are developed, and applied to measurements made by the Lower Atmosphere Physics Section, Radio Propagation Engineering Division, National Bureau of Standards, Boulder, Colorado. Comparisons of these methods are included. (Author)
