Abstract : An investigation was conducted with the M37C Machine Gun firing from the XM1E1 Subsystem to determine the cause of the erratic operation which has been observed in helicopter tests of the armament system. Measurements were made of the motion of the bolt and receiver of the gun when firing from a rigid mount and from the landing skids of the helicopter. Results of the investigation have shown that the frequency of the original buffer mechanism was responsible for many of the malfunctions. Modification of the buffer system produced a very reliable gun-mount combination. (Author)
