Abstract : In an effort to develop a reproducible, objective method of studying natural and induced variation in the oral flora and their metabolic processes, enzyme analysis studies were carried out on whole saliva, dental plaque, and broth cultures of oral organisms. Various formulations of gum were used to evaluate the applicability of the technic. The data thus obtained indicate that if proper control procedures and standardized conditions are employed, alterations in the oral flora may well be detected by analysis of enzyme activity.
