Abstract : Backscattering from a monopole (linear scatterer) can be considerably diminished and almost suppressed if it is grounded in a cavity and the protruding length of the monopole does not exceed 0.45 lambda. The optimum depth of the cavity is about 0.25 lambda. The good agreement between theory and experiment justifies the rather bold theoretical assumptions made to avoid involved mathematics and implies their usefullness in similar problems. (Author)
