Abstract : As part of the preliminary selection of compositions for an HY-130/150 steel, the properties of production heats of 3 3/4Ni-Cr-Mo-V, 5 1/4Ni-CrMo-V, and 7 1/2Ni-Cr-Mo steels were compared with those of HY-80 steel when all steels were heattreated to yield strengths in the range 130 to 150 ksi. The assessment included a determination of the crack susceptibility, toughness, and transformation characteristics of the heat-affected zones of the four steels. The latter two determinations indicated that minimum embrittlement and adequate hardenability of the heat-affected zones were obtained in the Ni-Cr-Mo steels when the nickel content was about 5 percent. The present study reports the crack susceptibility of the four steels when they were fabricated into cruciform test specimens by the manual shielded metal-arc (covered-electrode) process (with E11018 electrodes) and by the inert-gas-shielded metal-arc (MIG) process (with experimental HY-130/150 filler wires).
