Abstract : Some experimental studies of the ionospheric D region are presented. The observations were made between 1958 and 1962. Routine observations of cosmic radio noise at 27.6 MHz were made by riometers at several stations. Electron densities in the lower part of the D region were determined from observations of partially reflected radio waves at 2.3 and 2.7 MHz during different ionospheric conditions. The experimental methods are discussed and the equipment is briefly described. The primary purpose of the investigations wasto study the different types of radio wave absorption occurring at high latitudes, but some observations made during sudden ionospheric disturbances, which are not limited in latitude, and during normal conditions, are also included. The theory of ionization and recombination in the D region is briefly reviewed, and when possible, agreement with the observations is discussed. The different types of absorption are treated separately. One section is devoted to the variation of electron density in the D region during twilight conditions. (Author)
