Abstract : The investigation is based on photometer, riometer and magnetometer recordings covering a period of two years. The correlation between the three parameters has been studied and was found to be very good between the auroral luminosity and the absorption of cosmic noise. Using the continuity equation the product ionizationrate times recombination coefficient was obtained. The measured value was 5.10 neg 6th power ion pairs/sec square kR and with the electron density deduced from the simultaneous absorption measurements a recombination coefficient is obtained which is higher than the ionization rate calculated for the ionization by X-rays, and the conclusion made from these measurements is that the ionization causing the absorption is made mainly by direct ionizing particles.
