Abstract : Stress and birefringence are simultaneously measured during the relaxation (at constant length) of natural rubber vulcanizate at room temperature. At higher elongations, crystallization results in an enhanced decrease in stress and an increase in birefringence during the relaxation. An attempt is made to quantitatively correlate these observations utilizing the Flory theory of stress on crystallizing rubbers and the Kuhn-Treloar theory of birefringence of rubbery networks.
