Abstract : Using IGY Data analyses of Obasi (1963), the mean meridional circulation for the southern hemisphere is measured indirectly, by means of the method of characteristics. The horizontal and vertical momentum convergences enter as forcing functions. The calculations generally confirm Obasi's directly measured three cell pattern, but there are strong differences in cell intensity and position. Comparison with northern hemisphere calculations of Mintz and Lang (1955) show strong similarities, except for the polar direct cell. The possibility of negative vertical eddy viscosities is considered. (Author)
