Abstract : The nonlinear differential equation for heat conduction in a medium having temperature dependent thermal conductivity and heat capacity is solved numerically for an experimentally important case. This case is the liberation of heat by an instantaneous plane source in an infinite, linear solid whose thermal parameters are assumed to have the temperature dependence of real alloys at cryostatic temperatures. It is found that the temperature transients for this case do not differ substantially from those of a solid having temperature independence thermal parameters, if the heat source does not exceed a certain strength whose value is derived. This result provides the basis for easier quantitative calorimetry of instantaneous heat sources activated by disconinuous plastic flow in alloy/ at helium temperatures. (Author)
