Abstract : The Tollmein-Schlichting neutral stability curves for Poiseuille flow between flexible walls were obtained numerically by Hains and Price. A reduction in the wall tension closes and shrinks the curves for Poiseuille flow until complete stability is obtained. Neutral curves for the Blasius velocity profile were recently presented by Landahl. Landahl found that flexibility increased the critical Reynolds number slightly, but made no mention of the closing of the curves. In this report it is shown that a direct comparison of the two sets of curves is not possible, because of different difinitions of the non-dimensional wall properties. It is desirable to have each stability curve correspond to a single given wall as in the case of a rigid wall. To accomplish this, the Reynolds number is changed by varying only the velocity for the case of Poiseuille flow, and varying only the viscosity for the Blasius profile. The stability diagrams presented by Landahl are therefore of little value to the experimentalist who wishes to change the Reynolds number by increasing the boundary layer thickness or by raising the freestream velocity.
