Abstract : A similarity transformation was developed to study the problem of thermal stress in a solid body bounded by one or two cones. It was found that if the temperature on the free surfaces be prescribed as powers of distance from the vertex, a set of similarity variables can be found which reduce the thermoelastic equations into Legendre equations; consequently, the problem can be solved easily. The solution is given in detail for the particular case when the bounding free surfaces are maintained at constant temperature. The variations, in a figure, are shown of normal and shear stresses along different radial lines inside the body. (Author)
