Abstract : Conditions for and properties of the invariance are considered of an integral which represents a global measure of uniformity of a class of steadystate viscous incompressible flows. This integral is related to the forces which account for the inherent nonlinear structure of the NavierStokes equations. The condition of global constraint on flow fields rendered by its properties of invariance is therefore tantamount to a condition on the nonlinear structure of the classical equations of hydrodynamics.
