Abstract : A qualitative picture of the electronic structure of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic metals and alloys is given. Ferromagnetism occurs when half the 3d states are completely filled while antiferromagnetism occurs when neither half the 3d states is completely filled. Gamma iron appears to be an example of a metal that can exist in both forms. (Author)
