Abstract : A discussion is presented of the argument that Bayes's theorem is a normative model for inductive inference. Results of several experiments are presented that indicate that human beings do not behave the way this normative model says they should; the implications of these ideas and findings suggest the design of information processing systems intended for business, military, or governmental use. Research in progress on such systems is described. (Author)
