Abstract : A steepest-ascent method for the simultaneous optimization of time dependent functions and time invariant quantities is developed. The method is based on the definition of a step size which combines the integral step associated with the time functions and the sum of squares step associated with the time invariant quantities. The particular case of interest is the optimization of multiple-arc-problems with the associated corner times. Using the properties of the adjoint system, a relationship describing the effects of small changes in the corner times is developed; and the generalized steepest-ascent method is applied to determine the optimum corner times and steering functions. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the efficacy of the technique. (Author)
