Abstract : An analysis is given of frequency modulation of a gas laser by a time-varying axial magnetic field. Preliminary experimental results are reported. A helium-neon laser employing a dc-excited discharge between close-spaced parallel electrodes has yielded laser action at a wavelength of 1.15 microns. Analysis and experimental results show that the 'gain-switching' technique will be very useful for the repeated, reliable production of short, high-power laser pulses needed in the study of nonlinear optical effects and in optical radar.
