Abstract : The application of Kossel line techniques to the crystallographic study of filamentary growths of iron was demonstrated. The ability to investigate very small regions of a crystal lattice proved to be extremely advantageous since this allows one to study in detail different portions along the axis of an iron whisker. Thermal gradients, which are the result of heating by the electron beam used to excite the X-ray source, can be detrimental to obtaining good patterns from whiskers less than 5 microns in thickness.
