Abstract : The work reported was concerned primarily with the design and development of an informationmanagement subsystem that would operate in the environment of a cooperative man/computer system for the production of operating computer programs. An experimental system was developed which utilized the AN/FSQ-32 computer in a time-sharing mode of operation, as well as a cathode ray tube display and associated input-output facilities for real-time machine use by a programmer. A number of symbol manipulation techniques (e.g., insert, delete) developed on the ARPA project were used for the editing and manipulation of text and programming material on the display. Methods of file organization were studied and established for the machine file. Procedures were established for obtaining and using machinereadable records from all of the project records (e.g., memos, correspondence, bibliographies, reports) generated by the user group, to serve as the basis for an experimental machine file. This machine file was established, along with appropriate file search routines, to permit the reading of the natural text of the file material. Studies were made of methods to automatically determine alternate search prescriptions, and display these to the inquiror. Procedures were established to perform some copy editing of the text material (e.g., check for correct spelling). (Author)
