Abstract : An associative searching technique was developed for the automatic storage and retrieval of natural language message information. A user may employ his own vocabulary in formulating a typewritten request, and the technique allows the machine to find relevant information even when there is no direct matching of vocabulary items. The method thus lends itself to ready interaction between computer and user. Answers are based on the network of associations implicit in the stored message data, and items are outputed in order of decreasing relevance to the question. The technique can be advantageously implemented on existing data processing equipment and may eventually be used in conjunction with a novel form of associative memory-processor. The associative retrieval method does not require pre-indexing of the stored information. (Author)
