Abstract : A new numerical method for a class of nonlinear boundary value problems is described and a variety of examples are presented to indicate its potential value. The essential idea is to apply finite difference methods to a functional rather than to the Euler differential equation of that functional. Applications are made to problems in minimal surfaces, geodesics, and subsonic flows, which were previously inaccessible. (Author)
