Abstract : Some preliminary investigations of the photodissociation of simple molecules in the extreme UV (<1000 angstroms) were carried out. The gases were irradiated by dispersen light and the fluorescence intensity in the Schumann-UV - between 1100 - 1500 angstroms and 1250 - 1500 angstroms respectively - was measured as a function of the irradiating wavelength. These first experiments showed qualitatively which molecules show fluorescence within the two regions, attributable to dissociation. Gases studied included: H2, O2, NO, H2O, CO2, NH3, N2O, N2, CO.
