Abstract : Sensitivities of wind and temperature measuring systems employed in the Meteorological Rocket Network are adequate to provide vertical detail structure information on a scale of the order of a few hundred meters in the stratosphere. In a few instances, data in the horizontal plane have been obtained with sensitivities of the order of a few kilometers. The wind data have been analyzed and discussed in the light of existing theories of the functional characteristics of the stratosphere as a medium for the generation and/or transportation of an energy flux, particularly of the type characteristized by pressure perturbations. The results are consistent with both modes of operation, illustrating features to be expected in the propagation of internal waves, and also illustrating evidence of internal generation of the detail structure in the upper stratosphere.
