Abstract : The analytic and numerical aspects of the application of three optimization techniques to a general problem in flight mechanics are investigated and compared. The three techniques include the calculus of variations, the method of steepest descent, and dynamic programming. A derivation of the theory of each technique is included to show where and why the major numerical difficulties arise. The procedures employed to overcome these difficulties are discussed in detail. The primary advantages afforded by each of the three techniques are also discussed and compared; conclusions are drawn as to which technique will generally be the most satisfactory under varying circumstances.
