Abstract : Studies using radiotracer techniques and electrical conductivity measurements developed previously were continued, using a rolling fourball test machine. Data on several lubricants under different operating conditions are reported. The development of high resolution autoradiography techniques is described and the results of a brief study of wear particle size in the rolling four-ball tester are given as well as recent progress in the development of a dynamic two-ball tester for the study of film thickness and lubrication effects on contact stresses at rolling contacts, using X-ray beam techniques. A Primoldecalin lubricant blend having 8.9 cs. viscosity at test temperature was selected for endurance testing. Wear tests were conducted on the synthetic lubricant polyphenyl ether. Conductivity tests were run on polyphenyl ether and also on an ester base lubricant (Mil-L-7808D). (Author)
