Abstract : This final report summarizes the results of a research program whose ultimate objective is the development of a nonsilver halide photographic process based upon photopolymerization. Work toward this goal was in three main areas of research: (1) design and evaluation of efficient visible-light-activated free-radical initiator systems; (2) study of the effects of viscosity on photopolymerization; and (3) elimination of oxygen inhibition. Detailed information is given on the kinetics and mechanism of photoinitiation, photopolymerization in gelatin slabs, and oxygen removal with bisulfite ion. The investigations led to the development of initiator systems that can function throughout a broad pH range, and the confirmation of efficient photopolymerization under conditions of high viscosity. In addition, new clues were obtained on the direction of continued research toward the development of a practical photographic system. (Author)
