Abstract : Data on skeletal fluorosis in many parts of the world indicate that the relation between waterborne fluoride and fluorosis in some areas differs markedly from that reported in North America. It appears that this difference may be caused by differences in the nutritional adequacy of the diets, in the fluoride content of the diets, and in the general health of the people involved. In North America, some segments of the population subsist at a low nutritional level, and studies specifically designed to determine the effect of fluoride on such people should be possible. The fluoride content of the average North American diet has probably been increasing during recent years, and studies of total daily intake are needed. Studies of the effects of fluoride on individuals with low general health or suffering from specific chronic illnesses, are also needed. (Author)
