Abstract : This report discusses research on laser devices in two major areas: gas laser media and output control. An apparatus was completed for testing the principle of relaxation of the lower laser level in a gas discharge by inelastic atom-atom collisions. An alumina tube for containing a manganese-noble gas mixture at 1350 C was rebuilt. He-Xe test oscillations were generated in this tube at 1350 C. A resistance-heated tantalum tube for containing a lanthanum-noble gas mixture at 1800 C was completed. A discharge current density of 0.5 amp/sq. cm was achieved between this tube and a concentric tungsten filament over a length of 10 cm. Progress was made in the investigation of improvements in energy radiance which can be achieved by mode selection in a ruby cavity. An accurate technique for measuring pulse energy per unit solid angle was established. A five-fold increase in angular energy density was observed when one reflector was moved far enough away from the ruby to discriminate effectively against off axis modes. (Author)
