Abstract : The purpose of Project 2.5.1, Fallout Studies, was to obtain data required to construct closed contours for dose rate levels down to and including 1-r/hr at H + 1 hour and in so doing obtain information concerning: (=) the role of the base surge as a primary carrier of activity; (2) radiation intensities in areas contaminated by fallout, base surge, and in the crater-lip region; (3) time of arrival of activity at various distances from ground zero; (4) depth of burial of activity in the crater and on the lip, and (5) air-to-ground radiation intensity correlation factors calculated from data obtained during aerial surveys of the contaminated areas. This information then could be applied to the problem of: verifying and extending existing scaling relationships for the determination of contamination patterns resulting from the underground detonation of nuclear weapons at different scaled depths; developing countermeasures for reducing the radiation hazard in the contaminated areas; estimating the magnitude of the effort required to reclaim the crater-lip area; and improving instrumentation and techniques for rapid aerial survey of contaminated areas.
