Abstract : Several methods of producing an adherent chromium oxide layer on the surface of the electrodeposited chromium coating were studied. A two-cycle heat treatment and heat treatment at 1600 F in a partial atmosphere of argon produced a coating which, in some cases, protected the graphite substrate for 1 hour at 2700 F without failure of the coating-substrate composite. Tests of two grades of graphite having a coefficient of thermal expansion close to that of chromium indicated that they did not perform as well as the ATJ graphite which was used as the substrate material in all previous coating studies.
