Abstract : Recrystallization experiments with artificial nucleation have been carried out in single crystals of high purity aluminum, of Al-Fe-Si alloys, Al-Mn alloys and of high purity silver. In all investigated cases the action of growth selection leading to preferred orientations of the recrystallized grains could be proven. By a quantitative theory of growth selection the orientation distribution of the recrystallized grains could be connected with the growth rate of the differently oriented crystals and with the number of nuclei initially available. Methods for describing orientation distributions and orientation relationships for the case of broad orientation scattering have also been developed. They are based either on the introduction of an orientation distance derived from the pole figures or on the determination of the axes and angles of rotation which transform the recrystallized grains into the matrix. With the aid of a rather extensive computer program, these orientation distributions of the recrystallized grains have been determined for different metals and alloys and for different orientations of the matrix crystals.
