Abstract : The nature and extent of Rhode Island's marine orientation toward Narragansett Bay might be assessed in one of three ways: (1) the degree of economic dependence of the land on the marine resources; (2) the extent of the total marine resource potential which is being realazed; (3) the degree of public commitment to marine resource use, in terms of financial investment and of restrictive legislation. A study of the impact of Narragansett Bay on Rhode Island's economy reveals that, except for the naval installations, the Bay is not of major economic importance. Public opinion in the state is decidely against any expenditure of funds for the construction of hurricane barriers across the mouths of the Bay. On the other hand the voters, approved almost 2 to 1 a $5 million bond issue for the development of seven new state parks in Rhode Island, four of them on the shoreline of Narragansett Bay. Within the next year additional material will be analyzed for further refinement of the public commitment concept in marine orientation. (Author)
