Abstract : A study was made to determine the ability of gunners to track OH-13 helicopters employing various maneuvers. An important portion of the research effort was concerned with helicopter operations with emphasis on improving the reconnaissance effectiveness of light observation helicopters. Studies in this area have evaluated the relative worth of such helicopter techniques as flying nap-of-the-earth, popping up from behind trees and terrain masks, and dismounting an observer. The scope of these studies, however, did not include analyses of gunner tracking ability against aerial targets. Successful completion of helicopter missions may depend on effective fire evasion. The field endeavor described in this paper was designed to determine the ability of ground gunners to track the OH-13 helicopter performing evasive maneuvers. (Author)
