Abstract : A sled-mounted floodlighting unit was developed to provide illumination and a portable lightduty power source for work areas away from main camps and construction sites in polar regions. It consists of a standard Army Quartermaster 400-pound-capacity manhaul sled, a lightweight 3-kw gasoline-engine-driven generator, and four light standards with three 150-watt lamps each. Evaluation of the unit in the Arctic has proved it to be well-suited for polar use. The sledmounted unit is easily towed by one man; it provides the required illumination of 1 footcandle at 100 feet within an included angle of 90 degrees; it is lightweight and compact for shipment by air; it is trouble-free; and the cost is reasonable. The unit is detailed in Y + D Drawing No. 993763 and is recommended as a standard item of construction equipment for polar operations. (Author)
