Abstract : The (p, p alpha) and (alpha, 2 alpha) reactions furnish a useful tool for studying alphaparticle clustering within the nucleus. These reactions are discussed in terms of the momentum distribution function for the mass centre of the four nucleons to be knocked out as an alphaparticle and of the probability of finding the alphaparticle within the nucleus. The momentum distribution for the mass centre of the four nucleons within the nucleus is the same for both the reactions. The probability of finding the alphaparticle inside the nucleus in the (alpha, 2 alpha) reaction is compared with the corresponding probability in the (p, p alpha) reaction. (Author)
