Abstract : Several dielectric materials have been found with a substantially higher resistance to damage from Q-switched laser light than the materials usually used to make dielectric mirrors. Varied data have been obtained which support an internal mechanical stress theory of damage to dielectric coatings. Data have also been obtained on the damage resistance of antireflection coatings on commonly used substrates including ruby. Data have been obtained about laser induced damage within the volume of optical materials which includes threshold measurements, velocity of damage propagation measurements and velocity of sound measurements in two optical glasses.
