Abstract : The equivalence of the phase modulation index of a light beam and the Raman-Nath parameter of an acoustic diffraction grating is developed. The diffraction integral for an amplitude modulated acoustic wave is solved. The solution reverts to the Raman-Nath result when the amplitude modulation index goes to zero. (Author)
