Abstract : This report describes the development of a low hysteresis zero cross-over detector. The device consists essentially of: (1) a tunnel diode detector stage; (2) an isolation stage; (3) an oscillation-suppressor stage; and (4) a Schmitt trigger stage. The last three stages use only transistors operated as shock-wave amplifiers to maintain sharp leading edges. The output voltage is a 12-volt square wave with a rise time of 60 nano seconds. The maximum lag in cross-over position of the output is estimated to be smaller than 100 nano seconds. The tunnel diode detector clips signals with amplitudes smaller than 1 millivolt in a frequency band between 0 and 100 KC. The complete circuit operates over a frequency band from 10 cps to 60 KC. Photographs of waveforms at various points in the circuit are included. (Author)
