Abstract : The artificial earth satellite, Alouette, contains an ionospheric sounder, consisting of a pulse transmitter and receiver sweeping in frequency from 0.5 to 11.5 Mc/s. Pulses reflected from the topside of the ionosphere are detected by the receiver, and the time delay for the flight of the pulse is transmitted to the readout station over FM telemetry link. This paper given examples of some of the types of records obtained from the satellite, and summarizes the analyses which have been carried out. (Author)
