Abstract : The fluorescence of some rare earth chlorides have been examined in H2O AND D2O in order to determine the enhancement of the intensity of each band upon deuteration. The fluorescence from the 5D1 state in Eu(111) is hardly effected by deuteration in contrast to the 5D0 emissions which are enhanced by a factor in excess of ten. This lack of enhancement for the 5D1 emission is correlated to the very small energy difference between the 5D1 and 5D0 states which manifests a very fast non-radiative relaxation process. It is suggested that the dependence of the D2O effect upon the energy difference between the emitting level and the next lower level goes through a maximum in the vicinity of Sm(111). Three new molecular complexes of Eu(111) with neutral ligands of the general type O=P(Z)3 have also been synthesized. These ligands are not involved in any energy transfer process to the Eu(111) ion but instead serve to establish a particular crystal field. (Author)
