Abstract : This report summarizes results obtained as of May 31, 1963, on the development of an HY-130/150 Weldment and describes the investigations that are planned for the immediate future. Existing information indicates that a number of quenched and tempered Ni-Cr-Mo steels exhibit the desired strength and toughness in 1/2-inch-thick plates. Initial base-metal weldability studies indicate that optimum heat-affected-zone toughness is obtained at about 5% nickel in a Ni-Cr-Mo steel. Additional studies are now in progress on the effect of composition on the crack susceptibility, toughness, and transformation characteristics of the heat-affected zone of Ni-Cr-Mo steels. A filler metal was developed that exhibits excellent toughness at a yield strength of about 135 ksi. Studies of the effect of cold forming on the properties of HY-80 steel were completed and similar studies on an HY-130/150 steel are being initiated. (Author)
