Abstract : The report summarizes the results on the feasibility study of developing an HY-180/210 submarine hull weldment. Initial base-metal studies have been concentrated on an evaluation of the potential of the 18Ni-Co-Mo and the 10 to 12NiCr-Mo maraging steels as an HY-180/210 steel. In general, the yield-strength-notch-toughness relation for the maraging steels was similar to that for conventional quenched and tempered steels. Currently, the microstructural features that influence the toughness of maraging steels are being investigated with the aim of improving their strength-toughness relation. In addition, a program is planned to investigate steels that are strengthened concomitantly by the carbonmartensite and the maraging mechanisms. Special processing techniques such as rapid heat treatment and ausforming are being evaluated to establish their potential for strengthening HY-180/210 steels. Base-metal weldability studies have also been concentrated on the maraging steels but will be extended to other promising HY-180/210 steels as soon as their development warrants weldability evaluation.
