Abstract : Tests showed that the 1/2-inch-thick air-cooled plates of the HY-80, 3 3/4Ni-Cr-Mo-V, and 5 1/4Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels transformed predominantly to upper bainite, and after tempering, exhibited yield strengths in the range 97 to 130 ksi, an average of about 40 ksi less than the yieldstrength range of the quenched and tempered plates. The air-cooled plates of the 7 1/2NiCr-Mo steel transformed predominantly to martensite and lower bainite, and after tempering, exhibited yield strengths in the range 130 to 150 ksi, an average of 16 ksi below the yieldstrength range of the quenched and tempered plates. For all four steels, the notch toughness of the air-cooled and tempered plates was significantly poorer than that of the quenched and tempered plates over the entire range of yield strengths investigated. These results indicate that even for high-hardenability steels (hardenability index of 20), the yield-strengthnotch-toughness relation of quenched and tempered plates is significantly impaired as the plate thickness is increased to about 6 inches.
