Abstract : This Memorandum presents initial parts of a study of international trade between hostile societies, the purpose of which is to throw light on the interaction of political tensions and trade relations. The first part of the Memorandum addresses the matter in general, presenting concepts and defining the approach of study; the second part is a historical case study of hostile trade in seventeenth century Japan.
