Abstract : Six polymer systems were studied as coatings for use at 600 F (air cure) and 1000 F (heat cure) in air and in inert atmospheres. They are: poly-4,4'-oxydiphenylpyromellitimide, poly2,2'-(m-phenylene)-5,5'-bibenzimidazole, poly(m-,p-phenylene)-4-phenyltriazole, poly-mphenoxylene, poly-p-phenylene sulfide and polyphenylsilsesquioxane. Methods of depositing coatings were developed. Evaluation criteria were color, gloss, film integrity, adhesion, flexibility, elongation, and thermal weight loss. In an inert atmosphere, the benzimidazole and triazole polymers protected a stainless steel surface for 60 hr at 1000 F. In an oxidizing atmosphere, the pyromellitimide showed the best stability, failing after approximately 8 hr at 800 F in air. (Author)
