Abstract : The first objective is the study of various effects of laser radiation upon vapor and liquid systems comprised of, but not limited to, the simulant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) or air components or both. The second objective is to obtain basic information on the condensation of vapor and aerosol fogs as a result of laser radiation. Nucleation has been induced in supersaturated methanol vapor by non-focused Q-switched laser irradiation. This is the first time such phenomenon has been observed. Photographs were obtained of the long lasting cloud that was nucleated. Scattered radiation from a focused Q-switched laser beam was photographed in supersaturated methanol vapor with red sensitive film. Preliminary testing of a cloud chamber with DMMP as the working material is underway. The proton spin-lattice relaxation times of the methyl and methoxy protons in 50% SO2, DMMP solution have been measured. Preliminary testing of the spin echo apparatus has begun. From NMR studies, it was concluded that the correlation times for the random motions of the methyl and methoxy protons must be substantially different. Nucleation in supersaturated methanol may be stimulated by surface effects on the plastic material at the rear of the chamber, or standing wave phenomenon in the beam. (Author)
