Abstract : Two corrections to the linearized theory of incompressible turbulent wakes behind a body of revolution are presented. First, the nonlinear terms in the governing equations are retained and a second order solution is obtained. In the second case, a variable turbulent viscosity term is used in the linearized first order equation. Numerical results of both methods are compared with measured data for several axially symmetric bodies. The comparison indicates that both methods provide a better approximation than existing ones. The variable turbulent viscosity first order solution appears to give the best approximations, tending to substantiate the postulation of a radial dependence of the turbulent viscosity and also to illustrate the influence of the viscosity term.
