Abstract : A study was conducted to determine the basic aerodynamic coefficients of the aerial delivery system of the A-21 cargo container and the optimum parachute-riser configurations for its stabilization during the high velocity stage of the delivery. A method was developed whereby system characteristics could be synthesized from the characteristics of the system components. The methods and information set forth in this report make it possible to determine, to a close approximation, the moment characteristics of many system configurations and to indicate, in terms of specified static stabilization criteria, the most critical configuration of the A-21 container system. Conversely, the method enables the parachute size to be calculated if the system stability characteristics as well as the parachute type and riser length are specified. Also, systems using the Ribless Guide Surface, Ring-Slot and Ribbon parachutes are compared on the basis of equal free stream drag area, parachute diameters to satisfy specified stabilization criteria and over-all system drag.
