Abstract : Having already achieved laser operation with two unary ozides (Gd(2)O(3) and La(2)O(3) doped with Nd(+3), emphasis is now being placed on improvement of the crystal quality and performance efficiency of these hosts, as well as the extension of this work to other primary additives. Recently a study was undertaken of multiple doping effects (sensitized fluorescence), with particular attention being directed to the system Er(+3) is more than Tm(+3). Since the effect of the Er(+3) enhancement on Tm (+3) fluorescence has been found to increase with Er(+3) concentration, it was decided to proceed to the limiting case where the entire host lattice acts as a sensitizer (i.e., the system becomes Er(2)O(3): Tm(+3). Crystal growth of this system was subsequently initiated, and pulsed and CW laser operation of this material have now been achieved. A paper describing this work has been prepared and, pending clearance of its release, will be submitted for publication in 'Applied Physics Letters'. (Author)
